Crab Island is not an island. The submerged sandbar one mile north of Destin's East Pass was named for a nineteenth-century crab shack that once stood on pilings before Hurricane Eloise swept it away in 1975.
Today the sandbar spans roughly three acres at low tide and vanishes beneath two to four feet of gin-clear water during high tide, when the emerald platform becomes a floating social venue accessible only by vessel. No roads connect it to shore. No permanent structures rise from its sand.
The phenomenon attracts more than a quarter-million visitors annually between April and October, when water temperatures climb above twenty-four degrees Celsius. Private charters dominate the sandbar economy because public transit does not exist and anchoring regulations prohibit motorized craft from lingering in designated swimming zones. Licensed operators ferry passengers aboard pontoons, tiki boats, and center-console skiffs equipped with Bimini tops, coolers, and floating mats. Captains navigate the currents of the East Pass—a tidal channel that funnels Gulf water into Choctawhatchee Bay at velocities exceeding three knots during ebb flow—then idle into the shallows where anchor sets hold against the sandy bottom.

Charter clients select departure windows, route variations that include dolphin sightings near the Destin Bridge, and onboard amenities ranging from snorkel gear to floating cabanas.
